Modern Languages

At Thistley Hough Academy, our aim is to equip all learners of MFL with a strong foundation across the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. With a good understanding of the basic grammar and structures of the language, together with a secure basic vocabulary for dealing with a variety of known and unknown contexts, learners are able to move on to the next stage of language study with increasing confidence and proficiency. Through the study of foreign languages, we endeavour to embed cultural appreciation of the people and countries where French and Spanish are spoken.  Our five year programme of study aims to maximise the progress and success of every student, irrespective of their starting point in foreign language learning.

The French programmes of study cover contemporary topics and are tailored to meet the needs of all ages and abilities. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are developed throughout, and grammar is taught explicitly, encouraging and enabling learners to become increasingly autonomous at understanding and producing language.

In Years 7, 8 and 9, we follow the interactive Allez course (via Kerboodle) which helps develop independence and progression to GCSE, and is arranged over 18 units:-

Tout sur moi (introductions and greetings, describing oneself, others and favourite objects; French-speaking countries)

Mon monde perso (personality, family, friends and school subjects)

Accro à la technologie (different technology; risks, pros and cons and favourite gadgets)

Etre ado, c’est quoi? (relationships with parents, pocket money, helping at home, teenage problems, homelessness)

French GCSE further develops skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing which are all assessed, with equal weighting, during the Year 11 exam season.

Students follow the AQA GCSE French course which delivers the breadth and rigour required to develop the productive skills needed to manipulate language confidently. The course is modern, interesting and challenging with interactive activities via Kerboodle – including record and playback, grammar practice and assessment.
