Food Studies

Students at Thistley Hough Academy follow a food programme of studies to encourage healthy eating and living. Students learn the preparation skills for a wide range of recipes and understand how to adapt them for different needs. Food nutrition is taught through our theory lessons to give students a greater understanding of how to make sure they know how to make their own diet choices as healthy as possible.

We have links with the Head Chef at Staffordshire University who comes in and works with our students, delivering lessons on food preparation and discusses links with the food industry. The head development chef from our canteen provider also delivers some sessions for students interested in the industry.

We also have an onsite allotment where students learn how food grows and are able to use their produce in some recipes.

Years 7 to 9 follow a rotation based rolling programme alongside Design Technology. Each student will complete 4 terms in Food Studies across KS3. They can then choose the subject as an option in year 10.

During the programme the students will create dishes such as:
  • Fruit Smoothies
  • Pasta Salad
  • Fruit Crumble
  • Stir Fry
  • Soup
  • Breakfast Muffins
  • Fajitas
  • Victoria Sponge Cake
  • Bolognese Sauce
  • Savoury Scones
  • Special diet recipes
