This covers key elements of all three sciences; physics, chemistry and biology, building on their knowledge from Primary School and preparing them should they wish to pursue any of the sciences beyond GCSE level.
The course includes a practical element of 16 compulsory experiments which are then examined in the written papers. Each candidate will sit 6 exams as follows:
Biology Paper 1 – 1 hr 15 mins Cell biology; infection and response; organisation; bioenergetics
Biology Paper 2 – 1 hr 15 mins Homeostasis and response; Inheritance, variation and evolution; Ecology
Chemistry Paper 1 – 1 hr 15 mins Atomic structure and the Periodic Table; Bonding, structure and the properties of matter; Quantitative chemistry; Chemical change; Energy changes
Chemistry paper 2 – 1 hr 15 mins Rate and extent of chemical change; Organic chemistry; Chemical analysis; Chemistry of the atmosphere; Using resources
Physics Paper 1 – 1 hr 15 mins Energy, Electricity; Particle model of matter; Atomic structure
Physics paper 2 – 1 hr 15 mins Forces; Waves; magnetism and electromagnetism

There are a wide range of books available to support your child through their GCSE science course. There are revision guides, workbooks and combinations of these. At school we recommend the CGP guides and at various points throughout the year these can be purchased through school for a reduced price.
There is a science club for students on a Wednesday lunchtime, where they can take part in a range of activities depending on their interest.
Balcony club, run by Mrs Maher is an ecological club looking at creating an eco-friendly greenhouse and then growing a range of exotic plants.
There are a variety of trips organised at different times of the year to support students with an interest in careers in Healthcare and Medicine; courses available to support interested potential engineers and through work experience in Year 10, students can experience other scientific disciplines.
We also encourage students to watch appropriate TV programmes such as documentaries on nature; space; the environment and health. All of which provide some contextual understanding to the theory they learn in school. There are also some excellent radio programmes and TED talks online. YouTube offers some fabulous clips of science experiments.
The school takes part in Science Week each year with a range of activities for Years 7 – 10. These are designed to inspire and motivate students.
