Academy welcomes Commonwealth Games gold medallist Leon Baptiste

Photos/Interviews – Leon will be at Thistley Hough Academy in Penkhull from 9am, with a presentation of student awards at 2pm. Any media interested in interviewing Leon can contact Kerryanne Clancy on 01782 581213.

Our staff and students are set to be put through their paces on Thursday (October 3rd) when GB gold medallist Leon Baptiste drops in.

Leon Baptiste, who won gold medals in the 200 metres and 4 x 100 metres relay at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, will lead a sponsored fitness circuit aimed at encouraging greater participation in sport while raising funds for athletes in need of financial support.

All of our the staff and students taking part are being encouraged to raise as much as they can on the day, as awards will be presented by Leon to those who raise the most cash in a special assembly where Leon will describe his own sporting journey.

Thistley Hough Academy Principal Jayne Schofield said: “Everyone is really excited to welcome Leon to our Academy and spend the day with him.

“He’s a really inspirational role model as during his sporting career he’s had to overcome injury and missed out on competing at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

“His experiences and tips on how to succeed in every aspect of his career really embody everything we try and encourage in our students – teamwork, responsibility, communication and creativity – and hopefully he’ll inspire some future champions.”

Leon said: “I’ve felt the thrill of sprinting alongside the fastest men on earth winning an Olympic medal, and yet the energy and passion of youth still astounds me.

“My visits to empower children are thoroughly enjoyable and I thank all parties for the opportunity, including my long-term partner, Community Investment Company Sports For Champions UK.”

Leon is now an emerging coach in athletics, as well as a boxer and an ambassador for Sports for Champions UK through which the visit to Thistley Hough Academy was organised.

Any parents or pupils interested in finding out more about all the sporting opportunities Thistley Hough Academy has to offer can come to our open day on Wednesday October 16th which runs from 4pm-7pm. Book your place now at bit.ly/thistleyopenday
