Weekly Newsletter – Welcome to the new Academic Year 2018-2019

Dear Parents/Carers

Welcome to the new Academic Year 2018-2019

I am delighted and privileged to be writing this letter, at the start of the new academic year as Acting Principal at Thistley Hough Academy.  I am sure that most of you are aware that Mrs Holly Hartley will be leaving the Academy in December 2018, having transformed the education of the students that the Academy serves.  Until that time, Mrs Hartley will be assuming the role of Associate Principal and will work alongside me to ensure that we continue to deliver the highest standard of education, and strive to become outstanding.

Once again I am delighted to inform you that in the summer we secured another set of excellent examination results for our Year 11 students, which I believe is a result of the hard-work and dedication of all of the Academy community.

This academic year the students have returned from the summer break and made a ‘flying start’.  I am incredibly pleased with their attitude to learning and presentation; wearing the Thistley Hough purple blazer with pride.  As with the start of any academic year there are a number of changes taking place to further enhance the experiences of the students; a notable change being the relaunch of the Thistley Hough House system.  It is our belief that the new house system will further enrich our pastoral care, whilst offering students the opportunity to become part of a community within the school, where healthy competition will be fostered.

An important and integral part of the new system is the move away from the traditional pastoral structure of five Heads of Year, to our model of four non-teaching Heads of House.  The Heads of House will work closely with Form Tutors to provide appropriate pastoral support and intervention to our young people.  I strongly believe that this initiative will enable us to support academic achievement, as well as enforcing our high expectations in order that every student at the Academy becomes a successful, responsible and confident young person, who can make a positive contribution to our city and beyond.

At the start of the new academic year we also welcome several new members of staff to Thistley Hough Academy:

Evelyn Aboraah Head of House
Rebecca Bebbington Teacher of Science
Jonathan Beeley Teacher of Humanities (Mat. Cover)
Dylan Bryan Teacher of Mathematics

Mohammed Imtiaz Teacher of Computing and Computer Science
Alberta Jarquin Teaching Assistant
Matthew Light Teacher of Computer Science

Finally it is my absolute pleasure to also extend a Thistley Hough welcome to our new Year 7 cohort, who were introduced to the Academy community during whole school assembly last week.  I wish them every success, in their first year at the Academy and look forward to fostering their talents and abilities.

On behalf of all staff, students, Governors and members of the wider community, I look forward to working with you this academic year.  If there is anything else that you would like to discuss further with me, please do not hesitate to contact me.

With very best wishes
Jayne Schofield
